Key terms, explained
- Value shelf
- The products that give the most capability per pound, even if they give up finish, software polish or a quieter case. This collection is that shelf across categories, not a single product type.
- Trickle-down
- Last year's flagship features appearing on this year's cheaper products. Rapid trigger on a budget Hall-effect board, and hybrid drivers on a budget IEM, are both examples.
- Tape mod
- Painter's tape on the back of a keyboard's circuit board, which stiffens it slightly and kills ping. One of the cheapest acoustic upgrades, and the usual first mod on a budget board.
- Stabiliser rattle
- The loose, metallic noise from space, shift and enter on an untuned board. The most common giveaway of a cheaper keyboard, and the most worthwhile thing to fix.
- Seal
- How completely an IEM fills the ear canal. A poor seal loses bass first, which is why a budget in-ear that sounds thin is usually a tip-size problem rather than a driver one.
- ABS shine
- The gloss that develops on ABS keycaps where your fingers land. Harmless, and the reason people eventually swap to PBT. It does not affect how the switch feels.
- Entry Hall-effect
- A magnetic-switch keyboard at the low end of the range. Rapid trigger and adjustable actuation are present; the case, keycaps and software are where the budget was found.
- Buying twice
- Replacing a whole product because the one thing you cannot change - layout, tuning, shape - was wrong. The expensive way to learn a preference, and the thing this page is trying to save you from.
