Key terms, explained
- Mouse skates
- The replaceable feet on the underside of a mouse, usually PTFE. They are a wear part, and swapping them is the cheapest way to make an older mouse feel new again.
- Paracord cable
- A lightweight, very flexible braided cable. It removes most of the drag and tug of a stiff rubber cable, which is what makes a wired mouse feel closer to a wireless one.
- Coiled cable
- A cable with a sprung section that takes up slack vertically instead of along the desk. Practical on a mouse when paired with a bungee, and largely decorative on a keyboard.
- Mouse bungee
- A weighted arm that holds a mouse cable above the desk, so the cable cannot catch or drag during a fast movement. It is the accessory that makes a wired mouse behave predictably.
- Isopropyl alcohol
- The solvent used to lift old adhesive residue before fitting new mouse skates, and to clean contacts safely. It evaporates without leaving a film, which is why water and household cleaners are not substitutes.
- Microfibre cloth
- A tight-weave cloth that lifts dust and oil rather than pushing it around. The correct tool for a screen, where paper towel scratches coatings and leaves lint.
- Headset stand
- A raised hook that holds a headset off the desk. It frees mouse space, keeps the headband from deforming against a hard surface, and stops the cable coiling under everything else.
- Gold-plated connector
- A plug with a thin gold layer over the contact. Gold resists corrosion, so the connection stays reliable over years of plugging and unplugging - it does not improve the signal itself.
- Keycap puller
- A wire or ring tool that lifts keycaps without bending the switch stem. Necessary for cleaning under the caps and for changing keycaps without damaging the board.
