Buying guide
Which one is right for you
MousesThe full mouse range - a better place to hunt for a shape than this small collection.
Wireless MiceDongle plus Bluetooth, which is what a desk that has a PC and a laptop actually needs.
Gaming MiceIf you want the same mouse for work and play, the competitive range is larger.
HeadphonesA headset with a boom microphone, if the other half of the work desk is calls.
KeyboardsThe other half of a work-and-play desk - layout matters more than switches for typing.
Key terms, explained
- Ergonomic shape
- A shell sculpted to fill a right-handed palm, with a raised back and a rest for the thumb. Built for hours of the same posture, not for fast direction changes.
- Quiet switch
- A click that is muted for shared rooms. Gaming mice are often loud on purpose; a work mouse should not be. Rubber dampeners and different switch housings are how the noise is cut.
- Free-spin scroll
- A scroll wheel that can be switched from stepped clicks to a smooth spin, so long documents and spreadsheets move in one flick. More useful at a desk than in a game.
- Multi-device pairing
- Storing more than one host - typically a 2.4GHz dongle for the desktop and Bluetooth for a laptop - and switching between them. The most useful wireless feature on a work desk.
- Button mapping
- Assigning the side buttons to copy, paste, back, or a workspace shortcut. On a work mouse this does more for speed than any DPI setting.
- Palm rest posture
- Letting the whole palm sit on the mouse rather than perching on the fingertips. Less fatigue over a workday, and the reason a slightly larger shell often wins here.
- Silent click
- Marketing language for a quiet switch. It is still a real click internally; it is just dampened. Useful in an office, irrelevant in a game.
